Post-stroke dementia: frequency, predictors, and health impact

Abstract Background Cognitive impairment is an important aspect for stroke survivors. Little data are available about the frequency and risk factors of post-stroke dementia in Egypt. Objectives The aim this study to evaluate predictors its impact on outcome. Methods A total 380 patients with acute were included. Patients subjected demographic collection, neurological examination, assessment vascular factors. Furthermore, severity by Barthel Index was done. After 6 months, assessed outcome development dementia. Results Post-stroke detected 20.8% patient. It recorded more old ages, illiterates, unmarried, unemployed, those recurrent cerebral infarction (significantly cardio-embolic). Conclusion high Egypt, especially illiteracy, atrial fibrillation, brain atrophy, severe strokes, presented hemiplegia, sphincter affection, abnormal gait, psychotic features. Assessment should be done during follow up patients.
